VOILI VOILOU!!!!

RENDU AU FEUTRE ET AU PASTEL

In this tutorial, Mark will show us a sketch rendering using traditional markers and pastels. In many of today%u2019s studios, the computer and software such as Photoshop have replaced these techniques. They have undoubtedly moved things on leaps and bounds and there are many talented designers out there pushing new digital techniques further every day, but sometimes its good to take a step back and have a more %u201Chands on approach%u201D to a sketch.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/MarkRandall01/render01.jpg

The starting point is as always a good line drawing. This sketch started as a simple biro and marker thumbnail enlarged on the photocopier and used as the underlay. At this stage, I put the ellipses in for the wheels and sketch out the wheel design and other details. Do not be afraid to do several versions at this stage if you are not happy with the perspective or layout. I tend to work in quite a clear style so I try to keep the sketch tight at this stage, but these techniques can apply to more freeform styles as well.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/MarkRandall01/render02.jpg

Once you are happy with the line work, its time to put down some colour. I use Chartpak AD markers because I like the fluidity of the ink and the blending capabilities to achieve tonal variation. At this stage, it is very important to consider what it is you are rendering, remember you are trying to describe form as well as make a cool sketch! I start by establishing a horizon reflection and filling in below this; I then add colour in areas of shadow, this stage should be very quick otherwise, you will end up bogged down in to much detail work and the sketch will look overworked and lifeless. Note that I do not fill in the colour completely but leave the rear of the car empty. This is to give the sketch some depth and to draw focus to the front. I also left some blank areas in the side to give a hint of some reflection. Let the ink dry and then go over some areas again to give some tonal variation, this is most notable in the shadow under the air duct scoop on the body side.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/MarkRandall01/render03.jpg

Next, I add the shadows and the wheels with a combination of cool grey markers nos. 1, 3, 5 and 8 I have also filled in the screen area and the headrests. I used cool grey 8 for the dark areas of the front tyres and cool grey 5 for the same areas of the rear tyre to0 further enhance the depth. Again, tonal variations can be achieved by going over areas again; I also added some cool grey 3 to the darkest red areas to boost contrast.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/MarkRandall01/render04.jpg

Now for the messy bit! For this sketch I used I used 4 pastel colours, a red was a close match for the red marker, a sky blue, a deep blue and a little black. Each scrapped with a scalpel onto a spare sheet of paper. Depending on the quality of your pastels, you may need to add a small amount of baby powder to each pile to smooth out the pastel in to a fine powder. The aim here is to get the pastel to go on the paper as smoothly as possible, this is where the baby powder comes in, shake a small amount over the entire page and using a cotton pad or tissue pad spread it all over the sketch, unless you now cant see your sketch don%u2019t dust off the powder. Using a clean tissue pad (tear off approx a 50mm square and fold it 3-4 times to get a good folded edge) dap the folded edge in the red pastel and apply to your sketch. At this stage, I am not to worried about the intensity more trying to get colour in the right place, I have also added some blue to the screen and a touch of black to the shadows and to give some depth to the wheels. Try not to use too much black as it can make a sketch look muddy. When you are done use a putty rubber to carefully erase any unwanted pastel, for example in the headlights or wheels.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/MarkRandall01/render05.jpg

To increase the intensity of the pastels it is necessary to build them up in layers, fixing each layer as you go. I prefer to use letraset 103 (green tin) as it fixes well and gives a good surface for further pastel layers. Gently blow or shake of the excess pastel and baby powder and away from your workspace lightly spray an even coat over the sketch. Allow it to dry and then repeat step 4. At this stage, I added some blue to the headlamps and the deep blue to the screen area. The only black I used was under the air duct scoop on the body side. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you get the desired intensity, it should be possible in 3-4 layers any more than this and the paper starts to become over loaded.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/MarkRandall01/render07.jpg

The final stage is to tidy every thing up and add highlights. For this I use a black and a white prisma colour pencil and for extra crispness or detail a black biro. Highlights are then added with white gouache and a fine paintbrush.

With a little practice, it is possible to get pastel so intense it rivals markers; I also find that the lack of %u201Ccontrol + Z%u201D tends to focus the mind on the job in hand! I hope that this has been of some help to you and can inspire you work further.

For the first time you should design your Wireframe View of

your car on a A4 papre. with pencile and you must draw

the erea between tha atmosfer, Earth & Horizone reflection

with pen softlly.

http://i14.tinypic.com/63agejb.jpg

Thene with blade of a cutter you can make the powder of color with pastel on the darker erea of midtone color of atmosfer reflections on car body.

http://i7.tinypic.com/66j2nt3.jpg

Now you can use a Tissues to meke the papre colored with pastel powdered. for example on the glasses with the blue and for metal parts of body with Green colore.

http://i18.tinypic.com/523flvq.jpg

http://i14.tinypic.com/6b23z2t.jpg

Fix and control all the pastel powder easilly with clean tissues and you must clean another areas simply with a pencil Eraser.

http://i19.tinypic.com/4xviq2d.jpg

Now you can start to color your Earth and Horizone reflection with marker on the body.

http://i8.tinypic.com/5yv2cr8.jpg

so in all parts of the car body we have this reflections

http://i9.tinypic.com/62xcwb7.jpg

http://i7.tinypic.com/4u4wghx.jpg

Now with No.01 Warm gray marker we color all the rims area and plastic parts of body then with No.3 Warm gray marker we draw the Earth reflection on them.

http://i12.tinypic.com/549wdxw.jpg

http://i19.tinypic.com/53sd9fs.jpg

Earth and Horizone Reflection on the Glasses are black, at this time you must use the black marker easilly.

http://i13.tinypic.com/522lgdg.jpg

So Car Shadow is black too.and Car lastics so.

http://i14.tinypic.com/4tsfhxd.jpg

Now make a red Efect with red marker on back lights...

http://i11.tinypic.com/66vsl68.jpg

and Finally with a narrow brash and Poster color you should light reflections on the Edge of shiny parts.

http://i13.tinypic.com/6b0av7q.jpg

Make a brighter reflection on the Tires with a white fabercastel polychromos Color pencil like this.

Finally youre Work will be like this. Sign it and fix it with a Sparey Fixative and store it in your Art works Albume.

Un nouveau RENDU d'HABITACLE (c'est dans l'actu) sur PHOTOSHOP

Behind any good rendering is a good idea sketch. This was sketched in my notebook with a biro. Keep your lines loose to start with, roughing in the basic shape with light biro lines. I then start to firm up the lines by going over the them again until I am happy. I then used chartpak markers (any AD marker is fine) to add to the sketch with form, colour and graphics. For the grey areas I used a cool grey 3, the brown is a buff marker. I used the same marker over the top to achieve tonal variation. The next step is to take a white gel pen or white paint marker to add the highlights, instruments and other details. Look at products close to you, you will find that the highlights almost always fall on tight radius corners or edges.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior01.jpg

I often use an underlay for this kind of work, but in this case I used a reference image. Once you are happy, scan it into your computer at 150- 300 DPI.

Desaturate the sketch and reduce the lightness so it looks a little more like this. You can also clean up around the perimeter using the eraser tool (the paths tool can help you here a lot).

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior02.jpg

Start working over the top of the sketch using colours that match cool greys. A cool grey 5 will give you both shadows and highlights by using it on a multiply layer (for shadows( or a screen layer (for highlights). I have also started to work some of the highlights back up using a soft brush and painting white on a normal layer. Make sure this layer is on top of all other layers.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior03.jpg

Start picking out areas of colour working on a multiply layer, these early graphic stages are important, Photoshop gives you a lot of room for experimentation with graphics and colour. When I was doing this sketch I was always trying different variations of colour, texture and graphical break up. These screen shots are the result of a bit of tweaking, especially layer opacity. I have also picked out the dash display using a white soft brush at about 10% flow.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior04.jpg

Here I have just applied some cool grey to add some variation. Highlighted the rear view mirror and darkened down the dash and parts of the steering wheel. I have also added a bit of airbrush to suggest a screen.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior05.jpg

More darkening of the dash and a bit of work around the air vents to the side. I am not going to work on these areas too much since the idea of the sketch is to show the dash and wheel.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior06.jpg

Now is the time to start describing some surfaces, using cool greys on multiply and screen layers.

More work on the surfaces, I like to keep it simple with a very basic lighting set up. Something to note here is that I am not using any paths for the linework here, but this is not to say that you shouldn't if you feel it can help.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior08.jpg

Here I have worked the area where the wheel meets the dash, and worked on the steering wheel switches....picking out some highlights.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior09.jpg

Here I am still adding details to the steering wheel and preparing it for the Nissan badge which I will use clip art for.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior10.jpg

Here I have added the Nissan badge and some white airbrushing on the top of the dash. For the badge you can try a multiply or screen layer to help get the effect of the badge really lying on the steering wheel surface.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior11.jpg

I was getting a little bored of the white dash so decided to give it some colour. Just by using a soft brush on a multiply layer I also put a shadow from the steering wheel onto the dash. This kind of effect can really help you to describe the surfaces well. I have also worked around the air vent area around the pillars, just suggesting a rough shape for the area, again using a cool grey on a screen layer.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior12.jpg

I have added a bit more work around the A-pillars, and around the gear shifter....as well as some more highlighting. I like to let my work evolve, so often go back to areas and redefine them as I go along.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior13.jpg

More work on the wheel, and some detailing around the centre air vents. I am also adding more definition to the surfaces as I go along.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior14.jpg

I am now ready to call it a day here and move onto a new sketch, this idea has led me to start thinking about the seats for this car. I have just worked here on the surfaces adding a little more depth, as well as some understated branding. I have also cropped the image and faded out parts which are not that relevant. This project is pure fiction of course, produced just for myself.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior15.jpg

Once you are finished it can be a good idea to play around with the hue and saturation values, just to check it out. This sketch reacted well to this experimentation.

http://www.designertechniques.com/images/Tutorials/LeeAtwell01/interior16.jpg

I hope you have enjoyed the tutorial, just remember to keep practicing!!
