Against the stunning backdrop of the red marble Lenin memorial, the impossibly high walls of the Kremlin and the candy-coloured striped domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, few people spotted the unimposing Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 driver walking through Red Square.
For Heikki Kovalainen, sightseeing in Moscow was simply a sideshow to the main event: demonstrating the full might and power of a Formula 1 car to a revved up crowd at the spectacular Moscow City Racing event.
Present as a representative of technology Partner Mobil 1, and joining teams and drivers from WilliamsF1 and Red Bull Racing, Heikki got behind the wheel of last year’s championship-winning MP4-23 car to put on a demonstration run around the perimeter walls of the mighty Kremlin.
“It is always fantastic to take part in events like these,” said Heikki. “It’s great to be able to bring Formula 1 to the people – and this was an incredible showcase for the sport in one of the world’s most fascinating and impressive cities.”
Spending several days in the Russian capital and taking part in a signing session in the world famous GUM superstore, Heikki got to meet many Russian fans and to gauge their burgeoning interest in Formula 1. “The Russian people are genuinely knowledgeable about Formula 1 and there is a real increase in the sport’s popularity,” Heikki said. “The fans were really nice, very polite and incredibly enthusiastic.”
