Shortleg,

Many thanks for the picture of the crashed Tipo 33/3 of Maston Gregory/Toine Hezemans in the Targa 1970. It’s heavily modified… I think it’s a total-loss.

You also posted a picture of the Scuderia Sant Ambroeus Alfa Romeo Duetto (Girolama Capra/Guido Sala), they finished 28th in the 1968 edition of the Targa Florio.

It’s still a dream for me to drive the Madonie circuit with my own Alfa Spider (Coda Tronca).

Shortleg, have you ever driven the Targa circuit yourself?

Fafa423

You posted a picture from the Tipo 33 #190. Do you know who is at the wheel, is it Giancarlo Baghetti or Joakim Bonnier?

Hi spider, I have already reply to your question: he is Bonnier.

I drove many times on Targa circuit taking part in historic commemoration editions; exspecially in 2001 was found, on my Fulvia Z, between Vaccarella on Alfa Disco volante '53 and Munari on Fulvia barchetta '69!!!

What a fun to drive in them company on Madonie roads!

I'll post for you a my photo of that unforgettable day on private message.

Hi pifpa, I don't able to reply ! Anyway I think is not Maglioli because it had the snorkel on the bonnet white colour; then it could be Bracco, Taruffi or Manzon, sorry! The image is bad and moreover material on '53 is very poor.

In '56 the Targa has just turned fifty, but the race is not valid for World Chamionship! Le Mans tragedy in '55 has shocked racing world and the championship stages were five only: Argentina, USA, Italy (MM), Germany and Sweden.

Anyway the Targa can rely on 50 starting with the presence of Ferrari, Maserati, Osca, Porsche (one car only) and Mercedes (GT only).

Ferrari lines up two 860 Monza for Gendebien-Herrmann and Castellotti-Collins; Maserati lines up three 300S for Taruffi, Bordoni-Carini and Ravetto-Pottino, more A6 GCS and 150S for Bellucci, Scarlatti, Pedini and Sorrentino;

moreovere there are the Osca for Cabianca and Villoresi; one 550 RS Porsche for U. Maglioli and one C type Jaguar for Piper-Margulies . Mercedes team lines up its 300 SL Gullwing for VonTrips, Zampiero and G. Musso.

At last, the order of arrival declares winner astonishing Maglioli ahead Cabianca-Villoresi, Taruffi and Gendebien-Herrmann. In the first moment the crew Cabianca-Villoresi was dequalified and after reintegrated.

1956 manif.jpg

Immediately after race, Porsche publicized the victory by this poster, in wich the order of arrival is wrong in cause of reintegration of crew Cabianca-Villoresi at 2nd place.

Ahi, ahi Mr. Shortleg, this time You made a mistake!

It's true that in 1956, Porsche got its first victory at Targa, but for Umberto Maglioli was the second, infact his first one was in 1953 at the Lancia D20 wheels.

... or not?

Bye-bye,

Michele

DePortago tragedy at MM '57 marked the end of the road races, so Targa too.

To continue the tradition, started in 1906, Florio, in the same year, did not give up to his race and determined to hold a "regularity" stage reserved to series cars.

Participants were more than 120, but audiences not many,in spite of the participations of Taruffi, Boffa, Zagato, Vaccarella, Cahier. It was a strange and humble edition, fortunately limited to that year only.

For the record won Colonna ahead to Taruffi and Costantini.

In 1958 happens the miracle: Florio is able to persuade CSAI and FIA that his race is safe and in particular it is not too fast, then he get again the world validity as 3rd stage of championship.

In this year the entrant are few (38 qualified only); the race took place on 14 laps of Piccolo Circuito (72 km) for a total lenght of 1008 km.

At start Ferrari team by his 250 TR for Collins-P.Hill, Munaron-Seidel, Von Trips-Hawthorn and L.Musso-Gendebien; more private 500 TR 2000; one Aston Martin DBR1 for Moss-Brooks; two Porsche 718 RSK 1500 for Behra-Scarlatti and Barth-Maglioli; one Maserati 200 S for Boffa-Govoni; three Osca 1500 for Davis-DeTomaso, Cabianca-Bordoni, Mantovani-Scarfiotti and several Osca MT4; more the debut of Vaccarella on his Lancia Aurelia B20.

Unfortunately, in practice Der Stephanian dies on his Ferrari GT! (second dead after Masetti in Targa history)

The forecast is to Ferrari-Porsche duel, indeed so it will be.

At finish, after more than 10 h and 37' Musso-Gendebien wins ahead Behra-Scarlatti and VonTrips-Hawthorn at 94,800 km/h average. ( the fast lap will be by Moss at 102,147 km/h)

Happy days are 33vac is a new writing your wonderful forum, which I greatly appreciate it keeps alive the memory of our. Targa Florio.

My passion runs from 1963 to 1975, I do not have many pictures and then they always try new color especially, why give up the idea of joyful and passionate race.

Now I am looking for those of the Ford GT 40 Ford France; colour in the different sites I have not found.

Now I have a new question:

I never seen any photo of the only Shelby Cobra 427 that ever raced at the Targa.

It should be #178 that run, for one lap only in 1966 event, driven by Ed Freutel and Tony Settember (USA).

Does anyone some notice and/or photos of that car?

Thanks in advance,

Miki
