Were the cars left hand drive? If so, the windscreen wiper not sweeping full screen would have been a real problem and may have been mentioned somewhere. But it was probably fixed at the next service point. If not it might provide a clue for comparison with other photos."

I find out the following difference at the front bonnet of the two cars 14 & 5:

Par le passé, le département Compétition de Porsche avait déjà relevé bien des défis sur les pistes, loin de l’asphalte. Représentant un test de résistance exceptionnel pour les pilotes et les techniciens, l’East African Safari Rallye entra dans l’histoire sportive de Porsche. En 1978, Porsche aligna au départ deux voitures de série modifiées, de type 911 SC 3.0. Les ingénieurs investirent beaucoup d’efforts dans le châssis : avec une garde au sol de 28 centimètres, un débattement allongé, des suspensions de roue renforcées et des amortisseurs pneumatiques spéciaux, ces voitures de course étaient adaptées aux terribles exigences d’un rallye. Le moteur Boxer 6 cylindres de 250 ch était commandé par deux pompes à carburant avec un réservoir de 110 litres. Porsche domina ses concurrents jusqu’à ce qu’un problème technique ne renvoie Waldegård à la 4ème place, alors qu’il avait 46 minutes d’avance. L’équipage Preston/Layl termina le rallye en 2ème position au classement général. Plus tard, Porsche remit les pendules à l’heure sur le continent africain lors du rallye Paris-Dakar : la Porsche 911 Carrera 4x4 le remporta en 1984 et la légendaire Porsche 959 fit de même deux ans plus tard.

This is a quick service car (reg. number S-DE 6392). This car was recce car and during the rally was quick service car driven by Roland Kußmaul, and navigated by Jürgen Barth(on the PHOTO), who was coordinating all Porsche Service cars via Radio connection with the airplane.

 

Il s'agit d'une voiture de service rapide (reg. numéro S-DE 6392). Cette voiture a été la voiture de reconnaissance et pendant le rallye a été à service rapide voiture conduite par Roland Kußmaul, et navigué par Jürgen Barth (sur la photo), qui a été la coordination de toutes les voitures Porsche Service à la radio le cadre de l'avion.
