New car sales in South Africa are up a brilliant 21% year-on-year in May to 50,228 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 249,582 units, up 10% on 2011. After 3 consecutive months in pole position, the Toyota Hilux is passed by the VW Polo Vivo this month, leading for the first time since last January with 2,789 sales and 5.6%. The Hilux is still #1 year-to-date at 14,701 units and 5.9% vs. 13,506 and 5.4% for the Polo Vivo. Like in 2011 and 2012 year-to-date the VW Polo rounds up the podium this month with 2,343 sales and 4.7%.

The Chevrolet Utiliy and Nissan NP200 are anchored in 4th and 5th positions while the Ford Ranger is 6th for the third consecutive month thanks to 1,593 sales at 3.2%. But the big event in May in South Africa is the amazing arrival directly in 7th place for its first month of sales in the country of the Toyota Etios with 1,315 units and 2.6% share! In India where it was first built it took the Etios 8 months to first appear in the Top 10 but has done so right away in SA! It will also start selling in Brazil this September… As a result the Toyota Corolla/Auris takes a hit, down from #7 to #13…

Other great performers include the VW Tiguan up 8 spots to #29, the Audi Q3 breaking into the South African Top 50 for the first time at #38, the Honda Civic up 18 ranks to #42, the Fiat Punto up 22 to #43, the Jeep Compass up 14 to #53 and the Honda CR-V up 21 to #54.
Japon Mai 2012: Toyota Aqua only 600 sales below the Prius
New car sales in Japan are up a massive 66% year-on-year in May to 236,366 registrations, the combined effect of government subsidies on environmentally friendly cars and a low May 2011 based linked to the after-effects of the tsunami. The year-to-date total stands at 1,539,782 units, up 59% on 2011. The fight for the pole position is getting extremely tight: the Toyota Prius leads for the 12th consecutive month with 20,789 sales, up 220% year-on-year but only 599 units ahead of the Toyota Aqua at 20,091 units.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Mazda-CX-5-Japan-May-2012.jpgMazda CX-5

In fact, the only reason why the Aqua did not grab the top spot this month is because Toyota cannot keep up with demand for the new model! The next few months will be fascinating to follow. The rest of the Top 6 is unchanged compared to April: the Honda Fit rounds up the podium at +55%, ahead of the Honda Freed (+77%), Toyota Vitz (-1%) and Nissan Serena (+22%).

Other great performers include the Honda StepWGN up 5 spots to #7, the Toyota Vellfire up 317% to #9 and Alphard up 433% to #11. Further down, a couple of recently launched models continue to shine: the Mazda CX-5 enjoys its 5th month in the Top 30, up one spot to a best-ever 18th place with 2,890 units while the Toyota 86 ranks #22 with 2,432 sales.
Nouvelle Calédonie Avril 2012: Dacia Duster confirms new leadership
New Caledonian info is now a bi-monthly thing on Best Selling Cars Blog and the Dacia Duster impresses over March/April with 82 sales, confirming the pole position it held in January/February. The Nissan Navara comes out of nowhere (or outside the Top 10) to land #2 over the period thanks to 64 units sold and is above the Ford Fiesta at 57 sales.

The Ford Ranger, #1 each year since 2009, is down to #4 at 53 units. The new generation arrives in July and should help the model reclaim at least a place on the podium, if not the top spot. Notice also the Peugeot 206+ very solid at #5 with 50 sales and #3 year-to-date at 101 units, and the Dongfeng Utah back inside the Top 10 for the first time since last August.

Sales of new local cars are up just 0.7% year-on-year in May in South Korea to 120,574 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 566,743 units, down 9% on 2011. For the first time since last January and only the second time in the last two years the Hyundai Sonata is in the lead of the models ranking this month with 9,236 sales and 7.7%, ahead of the Hyundai Avante (aka Elantra) at 8,758 units and 7.3% but still in pole position in 2012 year-to-date with 45,325 sales and 8% vs. 42,088 and 7.4% for the Sonata. The Kia Morning (aka Picanto) rounds up the podium at 8,314 units and 6.9% but ranks #4 in 2012.

Just below the Kia K5 solid at #4 and 6.5%, the new generation Hyundai Santa Fe shoots up to a fantastic 5th position thanks to 7,809 sales for a 6.5% market share. In the coming few months the Santa Fe could have a serious go at the #1 spot overall for the first time since 2004… Further down, we welcome an all-new model in the ranking: the Kia K9 lands directly in 21st position with 1,500 sales and 1.4%.

Car sales in the Netherlands are down 4% in May to 47,628 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 255,177 units, down 8% on 2011. Already up 46 spots last month to #6, the Renault Megane is the surprise best-selling model in the country in May with an amazing 2,503 sales and 5.3% share. When you take into account that its average market share was well below 2% over the last 18 months it puts into perspective the Megane’s performance…

A full two percentage points below we find the VW Polo at 1,711 units and 3.6%, however still leader year-to-date by far with 9,952 sales and 3.9% and followed both this month and year-to-date by the Peugeot 107. In 4th place is another brilliant performer: the BMW 3 Series up a massive 16 ranks on last month to 1,379 sales and 2.9% share thanks to the new generation which is proving to be a big hit with European consumers…
USA Mai 2012: Chevrolet Malibu hits highest volume in 10 years
* NOW UPDATED with the Top 40 best-selling models! Click on title to see. A bigger update is still to come *

At +26% year-on-year, chances are the US car market will grow faster than China this month! Yep, this is rare enough to be bolded in my article… So it looks like the American consumer wants to buy cars again, and in a big way with sales up to 1,334,660 in May and 5,986,605 year-to-date, up a brilliant 13% on 2011. The driver of this growth is passenger cars, even though trucks fare very well too. Note General Motors reports its highest monthly sales in almost 3 years with 245,256 units in May, its highest tally since August 2009. Yes, it does sound like the economic crisis has well and truly passed in the US.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Toyota-Camry-US-May-2012.jpgToyota Camry

The Top 2 cars stay unchanged: 33rd consecutive time in pole position for the Ford F-Series, up 29% year-on-year to 54,836 units and 6th month in a row at #2 and #1 passenger car for the Toyota Camry with 39,571 sales, up a massive 110% on a month of May 2011 disrupted by the Japanese tsunami. The Chevrolet Silverado is back to its usual third place at +22%.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Honda-Civic-Coupe-US-May-2012.jpgHonda Civic Coupe

The Honda Civic is finally getting the boost its ‘new’ generation should have induced months ago, up 83% yoy to 33,490 sales and #4, its highest ranking since August 2010 and its best monthly volume since August 2009. The Toyota Corolla gets a similar treatment: up 87% to #5 and 31,847 units, its highest position since February 2011 and best volume since December 2009. In third place last month, the Honda Accord delivers another solid performance in May at #6 and 29,737 sales, up 75%.

But this month’s best performer is the new gen Chevrolet Malibu, up 2 spots to #7, its highest ranking since June 2011, and selling 29,579 units which is the nameplate’s strongest month in at least 10 years, beating the 25,600 sales it delivered in May 2011. The Toyota Prius falls to #14 but is up 210% year-on-year and the Nissan Altima is slowly improving again while the new gen reaches all dealerships across the country to #13.

After a complete overview of 1971-2011 Historical Data I can now share with you the most recent figures for Finland.

The Finnish car market is still undergoing the after-effects of the tax hike that occurred on April 1, with sales down 44% year-on-year in May at 7,139 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total into negative at 58,550 units, down 1.5% on 2011. The VW Golf is the best-selling model in the country this month and for the first time since June 2011 with 322 sales and 4.5% share. It is still #5 year-to-date at 1,964 units and 3.4% vs.#2 in 2011. The Toyota Yaris manages to maintain itself at an excellent 2nd place with 301 sales and 4.2% and is #4 ytd vs. #11 in 2011.

Up 7 spots on last month, the Skoda Octavia rounds up the podium at 281 units and 3.9% and is followed by the Ford Focus at 3.2% and the Toyota Avensis at 3.1%, still leader of the 2012 year-to-date ranking with 2,785 sales and 4.8% share. Improving on an already exceptional month of April, the Kia Rio is up one rank to a brilliant 6th place at 209 units and 2.9%.

Other great performers this month include the Honda Civic coming out of nowhere (or at least outside the Top 30) to land #11 in May with 161 sales and 2.3%, the VW Polo up to #12 at 132 units and 1.8% and the Hyundai i30 new generation up to #18 with 96 sales and 1.3%.
Singapour Avril 2012: Toyota reclaims leadership
June 4th, 2012 matgasnier Leave a comment Go to comments

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Toyota-Wish-Singapore-April-2012.jpgToyota Wish

* See the Top 25 best-selling brands by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Michael *

In Singapore at this stage I only have access to brands ranking but the trends are interesting enough to deserve a full article on here… 2,272 cars were sold in the country in April, bringing the year-to-date total to 9,782. While over the full year 2011 BMW ended 9 years of domination by Toyota to lead the brands ranking, over the first Quarter of 2012 it was the turn of Mercedes to hold the pole position with an outstanding 18.4% market share.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/BMW-3-Series-Singapore-April-2012.jpgBMW 3 Series

However the situation looks like it’s getting back to normal albeit very slowly, with Toyota reclaiming the #1 spot in April with 431 sales and 19% share, ahead of BMW at 16.3%, Volkswagen at 12.3% and Mercedes at 12.1%. Year-to-date, Mercedes is still king with 17% share, just above BMW at 16.4% while Toyota rounds up the podium at 13.5%. Note Toyota sales include Lexus.

This astonishing evolution of the Singaporean market is due to the Certificates of Entitlement (COEs), a government program meaning residents of Singapore have to bid for the right to buy a motor vehicle, with the number of certificates deliberately restricted. In April 2012 COEs prices went up again, to S$91,000 for cars over 1,600cc, roughly the same as the car price itself, and only the very rich can afford to buy a new car in Singapore these days…

And this is illustrated further down in the brands ranking. Notice Audi at #5, Porsche at #12 with 1.9%, Land Rover at #13 with 1.6%, Jaguar at #19 and 0.9%, Lamborghini at #24 and Ferrari at #25m, both with 7 sales in April.

Indian car sales continue on their very healthy run, up 7% year-on-year in May to 212,998 registrations, bringing the 2012 year-to-date total to 1,216,244 units, up 12% on 2011. While last month we witnessed a once-in-a-decade event with the Maruti Swift taking the lead for the first time ever, in May the ‘traditional’ order is resumed, just. The Maruti Alto reclaims the pole position with 20,724 sales and 9.7% share, but at -18% year-on-year it is still under threat from the Swift, up a massive 57% year-on-year to 20,050 units and a record 9.4%.

In fact, it’s the entire Swift family that breaks records again in May: the Maruti DZire is up 64% on May 2011 to reach 17,707 sales and 8.3% share, both volume and market share all-time highs for the model. All in all, the Swift family captures an elephant-size 17.7% of the Indian market this month! The two remaining models in the Top 5 are also in great shape: the Mahindra Bolero is #4 with 9,584 sales while the Tata Nano is up to a best-ever 5th position (it reached it once before in June 2010) thanks to 8,507 sales and 4% share. Is this the Nano renaissance Tata had been hoping for?

The Hyundai i20 also hits its highest position ever at #6 with 7,675 units, the Maruti Ertiga continues to impress, up 5 spots on April to #11 with a record 6,802 sales, the Honda Brio is back up to #16, the Mahindra XUV500 beats its volume and ranking records again at 3,471 sales and #23 and the Maruti Gypsy is up 20 ranks to #38.

Still no sign of recovery for the Spanish car market: sales are down 8% year-on-year in May to 72,514 registrations, the second worst month of May in the last 20 years after the 71,168 units sold in May 2009. The year-to-date total stands at 333,316 units, down 7% on 2011. Full Year 2012 predictions are now at 750,000 units, half the 2006 figure of 1,634,595… In this morose context the Renault Megane takes the lead of the models ranking in May with 2,916 sales and 4%, potentially helped by its recent refresh. It is only the 2nd time in the last 2 years with September 2011 that the Megane is #1 in Spain. It is now #4 year-to-date vs.#3 in 2011.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/VW-Polo-Spain-May-2012.jpgVW Polo

The VW Polo improves on an already excellent month of April to reach a record 4% share in 2nd place at 2,889 units. Outstanding month also for the Opel Corsa up 4 spots to #3 and the VW Golf up 7 to #4. Traditional leader of the Spanish market, the Seat Ibiza is down to 5th place this month with just 2.6% share. It is still in pole position year-to-date however with 12,443 sales and 3.7% ahead of the Nissan Qashqai, down to #6 in May.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Seat-Mii-Spain-May-2012.jpgSeat Mii

Renault has a fabulous month: beyond the Megane, the Clio is up 7 spots on April to #11 and the Scenic is up 12 to #17. Other great performers include the Peugeot 3008 up 25 ranks to break into the Spanish Top 20 for the first time at #19, the VW Touran up 24 to #25 and the Smart Fortwo up 60 to #42. Note the Peugeot 208 down 7 spots to #29.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Seat-Toledo-Spain-May-2012.jpgSeat Toledo

Further down, notice the Opel Zafira Tourer up 24 ranks to #56, the Chevrolet Spark up 100 to #62, the Seat Mii up 88 to break into the Spanish Top 100 for the first time at #66 with 317 sales, the Dacia Lodgy landing directly at #81 with 233 units and the Mazda CX-5 up 43 spots to #88. Lastly, this month we see the first unit of the new generation Seat Toledo registered.
Hongrie 5 mois 2012: Astra #1 – Has Suzuki got its mojo back?
Hungarian car sales continue to recover brilliantly after a couple of hellish years, up 20% year-on-year over both the first 5 months of 2012 to 22,829 registrations and in May at 4,581 units. Thanks to Zsolti I am able to share with you a Top 20 models ranking for 2012 year-to-date. The Opel Astra confirms it is now Hugary’s favourite with 1,395 sales and 6.1% share. Note this figure include 2 generations of the model the H with 820 units and J with 575. The Skoda Octavia, leader in 2011, is #2 with 1,257 sales and 5.5%.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Suzuki-Swift-Hungary-May-2012.jpgSuzuki Swift

There was a time when Suzuki dominated the Hungarian market head and shoulders with models built locally, even monopolising the podium in 2007 with the Swift, SX4 and Ignis. The economic crisis that saw Hungarian sales plunge by 60% in 2009 and by 26% in 2010 also took Suzuki with it: the Swift, best-seller in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, dropped to #4 in 2009 and #10 in 2010 before disappearing from the Top 10 completely in 2011. Will 2012 be the year Suzuki was reborn in Hungary? It looks like it, with the Swift up from a dismal #18 over the first 3 months of the year to a shiny #3 with 909 sales and 4% share over 5 months…

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Dacia-Duster-Hungary-May-2012.jpgDacia Duster

The other great performer in the Top 20 is the Dacia Duster: below the Ford Focus down to #4, it is up 2 spots to a brilliant 5th place with 693 units sold and a solid 3% market share. The Renault Fluence, Skoda Fabia, Ford Fiesta and Nissan Qashqai all lose ground while the VW Golf reclaims its spot in the Top 10 after finishing #4 both in 2010 and 2011.

Another depressing result for Greek car sales, down 48% year-on-year in May to 5,265 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 26,853 units, down 41% on 2011. For the first time in 13 years, exactly since July 1999 when the Citroen Saxo topped the Greek models ranking, a Citroen is in pole position: the C3 beats its record for the third consecutive month and sells 302 units for a brilliant 5.7% market share. It is now #6 year-to-date with 779 sales and 2.9% vs. #22 in 2011.

The Toyota Yaris is up one spot to #2 at 288 units and 5.5%, followed by the Opel Corsa down 2 to #3 with 274 sales and 5.2%. Year-to-date, the Corsa is still leader by far at 1,953 units and 7.3% vs. 1,466 and 5,3% for the Yaris. Good month for the Nissan Micra up 8 ranks to #4, ahead of the Opel Astra (-1). The Citroen C4 maintains itself in the Top 10 at #9 while the Citroen C1 is up a huge 40 spots to rank #10 and make Citroen the best-selling brand in the country this month.

2011 is definitely an excellent year for new car sales in Mexico, with May up 17% year-on-year to 80,267 registrations and bringing the year-to-date total to 383,731 units, up 11% on 2011. The Chevrolet Aveo seems unbeatable this year and celebrates its 6th consecutive month in pole position with 5,009 sales and 6.2, its highest market share ever in the country! It logically leads year-to-date at 22,398 units and 5.8%. The Nissan Versa stays solid in 2nd place with 3,826 sales and 4.8%, ahead of 2011′s leader the VW Clasico, up one spot to #3 at 3.9%.

Two other models really shine this month in the Mexican Top 10: the Chevrolet Spark reaches its highest ranking ever in the country at #4 with 2,730 sales and 3.4% and the Honda CR-V is back up to #6 (a position it held last February) thanks to 2,560 units sold and 3.2% share, up 4 spots on last month. Reversely the Nissan Tsuru keeps going down: -2 this month vs. April to #7 with 2,435 sales and 3%.

The Romanian new car market is definitely see-sawing this year: After gaining 86% in January, 27% in February, 29% in March but losing 13% in April, it is down another 9% in May to 7,745 units. All in all the year-to-date total is still largely in positive at +12% to 26,017 registrations. The Dacia Logan is getting back in shape at 1,487 sales and 19.2%, its strongest volume and market share so far in 2012. At #2 with 542 units and 7% the Skoda Octavia delivers its strongest market share since last August and passes the Dacia Duster, down to 4.1% in May, in the 2012 year-to-date ranking.

The next 3 models all have an outstanding month: the Renault Symbol is up 7 spots on last month to #4 with 313 sales and 4%, the Chevrolet Aveo is also up 7 to #5 at 236 units and 3% and the Dacia Sandero is up 22 to #6 with 213 sales and 2.8%. There is still no trace of the Dacia Lodgy in the Romanian ranking… Other great performers this month include the Opel Astra up 5 ranks to #8, the Toyota Auris up to #19, the Volvo S40 up to #32, Renault Twingo up to #33 and Fiat Linea up to #34.

In May the German new car market is down 5% year-on-year to 289,977 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,337,679 units, up just 0.3% on 2011. The VW Golf predictably holds the top spot at 7.6% share but the rest of the Top 10 is reshuffled. The VW Passat reclaims the #2 it held over the Full Year 2011 both this month and year-to-date at 2.9%. Helped by sales of the GTC version, the Opel Astra is up 2 spots on April to #3 at 7,410 units, followed by the BMW 3 Series at 7,052 and the Mercedes C-Class at 6,959.

The best performer this month is the Mercedes B-Class up 6 ranks to a fantastic 6th place with 6,006 sales and 2.1% share. This is by far the highest ranking the B-Class has ever reached in Germany since the nameplate launched in 2005, its previous record being #9 in March 2011. It is only the 4th time ever the B-Class sells upwards of 6,000 units in a single month, after March 2006 (6,272), November 2006 (6,364) and March 2011 (6,212). Finally it is the B-Class second best market share with its record still standing at 2.2% in August 2006.

VW Up!

The VW Up! also shines in May and breaks into the German Top 20 for the very first time at #19 thanks to 4,449 sales for a 1.5% market share. The Up! seems to eat into its big sister Polo’s sales, with the latter down a worrying 4 spots to #8, its worst ranking in the country since September 2009. Notice also the Audi A4 up 7 ranks to #9, its first time in the Top 10 since last October. The ranking is more than ever dominated by locals: if we count Skoda and Seat as local brands (controversial I know), there are only 2 foreign models in the Top 40! The Fiat Ducato is #27 and the Nissan Qashqai #39…

VW Beetle

Three models break into the German Top 100 for the first time this month: the VW Beetle new generation up 50 spots to #72 with 1,046 sales, the Seat Mii up 59 to #89 and 779 units and the Skoda Citigo up 121 to #91 with 761 sales. There are also 3 newcomers in the ranking: the Peugeot 4008 at #181 and 169 units, the Lexus GS at #225 with 56 sales and the Lancia Fulvia at #260 and 24 units.

http://www.acea.be/images/uploads/files/20120615_PRPC-FINAL-1205.pdf
