Like in neighbouring Australia, the Toyota Hilux takes advantage of the new model and a backlog of orders being honoured to take a marked lead of the models ranking with 600 sales and a massive 7.2% market share, potentially its best month ever in the country. It is now up to #2 year-to-date with 1,498 units and 3.8% below the Toyota Corolla (down to #8 this month) at 1,698 sales and 4.3%. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Mazda-CX-5-New-Zealand-May-2012.jpgMazda CX-5 At nearly half the sales of the Hilux, the Ford Ranger holds extremely well in 2nd place with 307 units and 3.7%, ahead of the Nissan Navara with 284 sales and 3.4%, the Suzuki Swift – best-selling passenger car again – at 277 units and 3.3% and the Hyundai i30 up 8 spots on April to #5 with 207 sales and 2.5%. Holden’s best-selling model is not the Commodore (#10) but the Captiva at #6. The all-new Mazda CX-5 manages to rank within the NZ Top 10 for the 2nd month in a row at #9 with 186 units and 2.2%. New Zealand is still the only country in the world where the CX-5 has broken into the monthly Top 10, Australia being the closest: #11 in April and #12 in May. Picture by kamshots. * See the Top 15 most produced models by clicking on the title! * As usual for Iran only models rankings by production (not sales) are available but they are a good reflection of car sales in the country as high import duties limit sales of other vehicles. The second month of the Persian year 1391, Ordibehesht, corresponds roughly to May 2012 and during that period only 86,356 cars were produced in Iran, a worrying fall of 34% on the 129,859 produced in Ordibehesht 1390. Year-to-date after 2 months in 1391 the market is down 31% to 140,096. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Iran-Khodro-Runna-Iran-May-2012.jpgIran Khodro Runna The main reason for this fall is the disappointing figures of the Saipa Pride: it is down 38% this month to 36,551 units and 37% year-to-date to 58,007. Peugeot’s halt on part imports from France is having an impact also: the Peugeot Pars is down 19% at #5, the 206 is down 56% at #6 and the 207i is down 89% at #9. However the Peugeot 405 manages to increase its sales year-on-year at +6% and reclaims the 2nd place with 13,986 sales, way ahead of the Iran Khodro Samand at 10,453. Renault models continue to take advantage of Saipa and Peugeot’s difficulties: the Tondar 90 (aka Dacia Logan) is up 34% year-on-year and stays at a best-ever 4th position with 8,657 units while the Megane is up 42% to 1,540 units at #8. Originally presented in April 2009, the Iran Khodro Runna, based on the Peugeot 206, had only ever been produced at 10 units in Ordibehesht 1390. 24 additional units have been recorded in the official spreadsheets of www.ivma.ir this month. Coincidence, production blip or real kick-start? Hard to say and only the next couple of months will confirm whether over 3 years on, large scale production is finally starting for the Runna. While we’re talking about delayed production starts, let’s mention the Iran Khodro Dena, unveiled in April 2011. Plans were to kick-start production in April 2012 to deliver 35,000 units by the end of the year but the Dena is yet to appear in the production spreadsheets of www.ivma.ir. In fact, Umferdarstofa, the Icelandic website publishing car sales, updates its data daily! If you are interested in checking car sales in Iceland every day you should click here. At mid-June, 1.003 vehicles were purchased in Iceland, that’s nearly as much as for the full month of May! (1.334). Potentially because in June in Iceland it’s daylight literally 24/7 so there is a lot more time to check out cars in dealerships… http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Suzuki-Jimny-Iceland-June-2012.jpgSuzuki Jimny. Picture by k44ril, all rights reserved. Given the size of the Icelandic car market, monthly and fortnightly models rankings are to be taken with a pinch of salt. While last month Toyota monopolised the podium, in June it’s the turn of Volkswagen to dominate, placing the Polo at #1 with 94 sales and 9.4% share followed by the Golf at 75 units. They are respectively #3 and #6 in the 2012 year-to-date ranking. Suzuki also has a fantastic time with the Grand Vitara up 32 spots on May to climb onto the podium at #3 with 62 sales and the Jimny up 10 ranks to #5 and 55 units. The Toyota Yaris, #1 year-to-date, is down to #8 while the Skoda Octavia (#2 YTD) is #4. Other great performers over the period include the Hyundai i10 up 40 spots to #9, the Kia Sorento up 14 to #10 and the Toyota Corolla up to #19. Even if the American car market seem pretty stable month after month the entire Top 10 apart from the #1 spot has already been completely reshuffled in 2012 compared to 2011. If the Ford F-Series seem certain to lodge yet another year in pole position (it will be its 31st in a row) with sales up 15%, the #2 spot is now in the hands of the Toyota Camry thanks to the new generation and sales up 44% year-on-year to 181,796. It passes the Chevrolet Silverado down to #3 with 160,942 units. If the Camry holds onto its 2nd place up until the end of the year it will be the first time it ranks that high since 2009. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Toyota-Camry-USA-May-2012.jpgThe Toyota Camry is #2 overall for the first time since 2009. The Nissan Altima stays at a very solid 4th position with sales up 20% and could potentially aim even higher once the new generation is on sale across the country later this year. The 3 Hondas in the Top 10 all lodge significant increases: the Civic is up 7 spots on its FY 2011 ranking to #5 with 135,082 sales, the Accord is up 3 to #6 and 126,254 and the CR-V is up 5 to #8 and 123,400. Notice also the Ford Fusion down 4 ranks to #10, the Ford Focus up 7 and 57% to #11, the Toyota Prius up 8 and 73% to #13 and the Chevrolet Cruze down 9 spots to #14. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Chrysler-300-USA-May-2012.jpgThe Chrysler 300 is up 203%. If you have access to regular models figures please make sure to let me know by commenting on this post. What I can share with you is the fantastic results Renault has been lodging each month of 2012. Sales of Renault Group cars (Renault and Dacia) have added up to 7,112 units in January, 8,312 in February, 11,125 in March, 12,052 in April and 12,402 in May, a new record for the Group and a huge 66% improvement on May 2011… Over the first 5 months of 2012, Renault Group sold 51,003 vehicles, up 38% year-on-year. This is split between 37,052 Renaults (+39%) and 13,951 Dacias (+37%). If we go into the detail of models, the Renault Symbol is still the most popular model in Algeria with 13,817 sales, while the Dacia Logan is on the up in spite of its 8 years of age at 8,973 units or 10,389 if we add the LCV version. The Renault Clio III is at 5,883 sales which is already 66% of its Full Year 2011 result and we are witnessing a total revival of the Renault Clio Campus (previous generation still available), selling 5,277 units in 5 months compared to 5,008 over the Full Year 2011… Notice also the Dacia Duster at 2,365 sales. In a more general sense, the Algerian car market has been booming in 2012. In April, sales were up a massive 52% to a record 39,639 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 136,414 units, up 43% on the same period in 2011 which was already up 25% on 2010… Previous post: Algeria March 2012: Renault Symbol and Toyota Hilux on top One year ago: Algeria May 2011: Chinese import Chevrolet Sail in Top 10 Full 5 months 2012 Renault sales below. This pole position is the culmination of consistent growth over the last 12 months since the new model was released, with its previous best ranking being #2 last March. The Sail is only the third model in Chinese history to sell over 30,000 monthly units after the BYD F3 which last passed this milestone in March 2010 and the VW Passat last January. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Ford-Focus-China-May-2012.jpgFord Focus The other great performer this month in China is the new generation Ford Focus up to 2nd place with 23,140 sales, ahead of the Buick Excelle down to #3 after 3 consecutive months on top at 23,085 units. The Excelle is still #1 year-to-date by far with 122,642 sales vs. 112,274 for the Sail. This means that potentially for the first time ever the Chinese podium is composed of 100% American models. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Venucia-D50-China-May-2012.jpgVenucia D50 The VW Magotan breaks into the Chinese Top 10 for the first time at #9 with a best-ever 17,612 units, the Audi A6L is up 5 spots on April to #14 with an outstanding 15,208 sales (vs. 4,840 in Germany!), the VW Sagitar is up 20 to #15, the VW Golf up 2 to #19, the BMW 5 Series L up 14 to #28 and the Chery Fulwin 2 up 23 to #44. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/FAW-Oley-China-May-2012.jpgFAW Oley With sales of the Great Wall Haval H3/H5 and H6 now counted separately, there is no Chinese model in the Top 20! The local best-seller is the Chery QQ at a weak #22, followed by the FAW Xiali N3/N5 at #24, the Great Wall Haval H6 at #29, the BYD F3 at #35, the Chery Tiggo at #36 and the Great Wall Voleex C30 at #38. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Great-Wall-Haval-M4.jpgGreat Wall Haval M4 Launched last month, the Venucia D50, Nissan’s first attempt at a low-cost brand/model is already up 69% and 45 spots to land at #77 with 4,816 sales, only 197 units below the Baojun 630, GM’s low-cost brand/model, and well above the Ciimo Si Ming also launched in April but down 17 ranks to #135. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Zotye-Z300-China-May-2012.jpgZotye Z300 The FAW Weizhi V5 is up 49 spots to #110, the Great Wall Hover M4 is up 486% and 85 ranks to #112 with 3.118 units, the GAC Trumpchi GS5 is up 75% to #188 and the Gonow Aoosed GX5 up 371% to #207. There are three new entrants in the Chinese ranking this month: the FAW Oley lands directly at #100 with 3,425 units, the Zotye Z300 is #198 with 583 sales and the Roewe 950 is #218 with 315 units. Many thanks to Kalo * 2012 will stay in the history of automobile as the year the Chinese started manufacturing cars in Europe. The Great Wall factory opened in Lovech, Bulgaria, in February 2012. This is planned as the focal point for Great Wall’s expansion throughout Europe. For the moment three Great Wall models are produced in Bulgaria: the Voleex C10 hatchback, Hover H5 SUV and Steed Pick-up. It looks like the Voleex C30 sedan could also be added to Great Wall’s Bulgarian factory lines soon. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Great-Wall-Voleex-C10-Bulgaria-2012d.jpg http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Great-Wall-Voleex-C10-Bulgaria-2012c.jpgGreat Wall Voleex C10 Thanks to Kalo, one of our readers in the place, I can share with you the latest about Great Wall in Bulgaria. Before opening the factory last February, Great Wall launched in the country last year and sold 137 units for a 0.6% market share, placing it in 24th position in the 2011 brands ranking. At this stage Great Wall is the only Chinese manufacturer present in Bulgaria. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Great-Wall-Voleex-C30-Bulgaria-2012.jpgGreat Wall Voleex C30 Great Wall production and dealership expansion has now started but is evolving relatively slowly for now. A few Voleex C10 and Hover can be seen on the roads but both sales and production seem to be symbolic at this stage. It will be fascinating to see where Great Wall stands in the first half 2012′s brands ranking and beyond… http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Great-Wall-Factory-Bulgaria-2012-600x374.jpgGreat Wall factory in Lovech, Bulgaria Back to Bulgaria as a whole: Bulgarian car sales were up 17% in 2011 to 22,550 registrations, and the title of top-selling brand changes hands to go to Volkswagen with 1,863 sales and 8.3% share, potentially thanks to excellent results of the Golf, Polo and Passat. Ford, leader in 2010, is down to #2 only 9 units below VW at 1,854. Toyota rounds up the podium but sees its share go from 8.8% in 2010 to 7.9% now. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Mercedes-M-Class-Bulgaria-2011.jpgMercedes sales were up 45% in Bulgaria in 2011 In the Top 10 brands, Opel at #4 (+40%), Dacia at #6 (+30%) and Skoda at #7 (+120%) all progress much faster than the market. Premium brands did extremely well in Bulgaria in 2011: Mercedes is at +44%, BMW at +45%, Audi at +80%, Volvo at +50%, Lexus at +28%, Porsche at +79% and Jaguar at +122%. Iran Khodro Runna The main reason for this fall is the disappointing figures of the Saipa Pride: it is down 38% this month to 36,551 units and 37% year-to-date to 58,007. This brings the year-to-date total to 423,000 units in 5 months, positioning Indonesia in line for its very first millionaire year! If the Indonesian car market breaks the 1 million milestone in 2012 it will be the first South-East Asian market to do so… http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Toyota-Avanza-Indonesia-May-2012b.jpgToyota Avanza in Ubud, Bali Indonesia May 2012 No surprises on the podium: the Toyota Avanza is still in the lead by far albeit with a market share down slightly to 16.9% at 16,137 units sold. The Toyota Innova stays #2 but with 5,997 sales and 6.3% it is only 41 units above the Daihatsu Xenia, the Avanza’s twin, which should reclaim its traditional 2nd spot next month. http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Daihatsu-Xenia-Indonesia-May-2012.jpgDaihatsu Xenia in Ubud, Bali Indonesia May 2012 After spending a few days in Bali Indonesia at the end of April I thought by taken 100+ car pictures I would be set for the next 12 months at least, but who else but the Suzuki Ertiga, just launched while I was there, is the hero of the month? I thus won’t be able to grace this article with personal pics of the car…You should all know by now how much Indonesians love MPVs so it should come as no surprise to see how successful the Ertiga is, it even looks like it was designed with Indonesia in mind, not India where it was originally launched. 3,402 sales as early as for its 2nd month in the country shoot it up to 5th place with an excellent 3.6% share. Other great performers this month include the Suzuki Carry Pick-up up 5 spots on April to #4 with 4,607 sales, the Honda Freed up 10 ranks to #11 with 2,363 units and 2.5% and the Honda Jazz staying solid at #13 with 2,344 sales.
