Yemen is the fourth middle-eastern country today after Jordan, Lebanon and Syria to now be graced with official sales data for the very first time on Best Selling Cars Blog thanks to the help of Ldman. It’s a very limited market with only 1,454 new vehicles sold over the first 3 months of 2012. Not all manufacturers are represented so the ranking could be incomplete but one thing is certain: Toyota dominates in Yemen.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Yemen.jpg

Like in nearby Qatar and Bahrain, the Toyota Land Cruiser is the best-selling model in the country over the period with a mammoth 23.8% market share thanks to 346 sales. The Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up comes 2nd with 228 units and 15.7% followed by the Toyota Hilux at 191 sales and 13.1%.

The Hyundai Tucson ranks #4 ahead of the Kia Cerato and Rio while the Range Rover is 7th with 32 sales and 2.2%, potentially its highest ranking in the world!
Syrie Q1 2012: Hyundai Elantra and Accent most popular
* See the Top 60 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Ldman *

Once again thanks to Ldman I can now share with you official sales data for Syria for the first time on Best Selling Cars Blog. 11,514 new cars were sold in Syria over the first Quarter of 2011, at least, as not all manufacturers’s sales figures are available. As I pictured on YouTube when I started this blog and similarly to neighbouring Lebanon and Jordan, Koreans rule in Syria with Hyundai and Kia trusting almost all position within the models Top 20.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Hyundai-Accent-Syria-March-2012.jpgHyundai Accent

Two recently relaunched Hyundais deliver out-of-this-world market shares: the Elantra is in pole position with 2,054 sales and 17.8% while the Accent is at 1,984 units and 17.2%. The Kia Frontier Pick-up (aka Bongo) rounds up the podium with 1,123 sales and 9.8%, ahead of the Hyundai Tucson at 8.6%, the Toyota Hilux at 7.4% and Hyundai Santa Fe at 6.9%. There are 5 more Kias and 5 more Hyundais in the Top 20 but remember not all brands are represented. The Top of the ranking should be very close to actuals though.

Yep, today is the day I am adding a few official sales to countries that never had any on this site before… Pretty exciting! Lebanon is the next cab off the rank and thank to Ldman again I am able to share with you that 3,954 new vehicles found a new buyer in Lebanon in March and 9,368 over the first 3 months of 2012.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Kia-Picanto-Lebanon-March-2012.jpgKia Picanto

The Nissan Sunny, in fact a rebadged previous generation Samsung SM3, is the best-selling model in the country both in March with 589 sales and an exceptional 14.9% market share and year-to-date at 932 units and 9.9%. Two Kias complete the podium in both rankings: the Picanto is #2 with 388 sales and 9.8% and the Rio is #3 at 385 units and 9.7%.

Like in neighbouring Jordan, the Koreans are present in force in Lebanon: the Hyundai i10 is #4 at 7.1% share, followed by the Hyundai Accent at #5 and 6.1%, the Kia Cerato at #6 and 4.3%, the Kia Sportage at #8, Hyundai Elantra at #9, Kia Sorento at #11 and Hyundai Tucson at #14. Other great performers this month in Lebanon include the Nissan Juke at #10, Mitsubishi Lancer at #13, Toyota Avanza at #16, Jeep Grand Cherokee at #21 and Hyundai Veloster at #23.

As I had predicted by viewing an exhaustive number of videos of the streets of Amman, the Koreans completely dominate car sales in Jordan with 18 models in the Top 20 both in March and year-to-date! Note these figures may not be 100% complete and some models may be missing.

New car sales in Europe are slowly sliding into recession, at -8% year-on-year in May to 1,164,071 registrations, with the UK the only market in the ‘Big 5′ to register year-on-year improvement. The 2012 year-to-date total now stands at 5,666,737 units, down 7% on 2011. No surprises on top: the VW Golf leads the way again with 41,420 sales, down 13% on May 2011 and is followed by the Ford Fiesta at 28,611 units (-12%) and the Opel Corsa with 26,771 sales (-11%). The VW Polo is down one spot to #4 but stays #3 year-to-date.

In spite of the new generation now in cruising mode, the Ford Focus is down 16% year-on-year to #6 and 22,611 units and #5 year-to-date at -2%. Only one model sees its sales progress vs. May 2011: the Renault Megane, thanks to its facelift and extremely strong performances in Spain and the Netherlands where it ranked #1, is back in the Top 10 for the first time in 2012, up 3% to #7 with 21,817 sales. The Fiat Panda is #9 with 19,300 units, down just 0.5% year-on-year.

New car sales in Egypt are up 4% year-on-year in May to 15,456 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 75,108 units, up 26% on a start of 2011 disrupted by the Spring revolution. The Hyundai Elantra rounds up the podium again with 1,272 units and 8.2%, its highest share since December 2011.

Pick-up sales in Thailand is now a monthly fixture on BSCB, because it is a very good indication of the future success of these vehicles worldwide, straight from the country where they are all produced and available first. The Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max have been dominating the ranking by far for years, and this month the Hilux takes a marked advantage over its archenemy by selling an enormous 19,534 units in a single month for a 41.1% market share, nearly 10 percentage points above the D-Max at 15,093 sales and 31.8%.

Year-to-date the Hilux leads with 88,750 units in 5 months for a 39.6% market share ahead of the D-Max at #2 with 71,411 sales and 31.9%. In both rankings the Mitsubishi Triton is #2 but while it reached an excellent 12% market share last month it is down to 9.3% in May vs. 11.4% year-to-date. The Chevrolet Colorado takes a breather this month after seeing its share grow all through 2012, down to 7.5% and 3,553 units.
World: The models that sold over 1 million units in a single year
Selling more than 1 million units in a single year is a feat not many cars have achieved in the past, and I thought it would be worth recapping which are these millionaire models. Based on all the data that I have accumulated so far at this stage I am aware of 6 models having achieved this feat. If you know more, have more accurate data or can build on the data featured in this article please ensure you get in touch by commenting on here!

The very first model to break the mythical barrier of one million units produced or sold in one year was the Ford Model T. If millionaire models are still very rare at the start of the 21st century you can imagine how huge a feat it would have been in 1922, 13 years after the introduction of the Model T to the US and the world, when the 1,301,067 units were churned out of Ford factories spread across the planet.

The year after in 1923, the Ford Model T became the first and only model to date to be produced at over 2 million units in a single year with 2,011,125 units. This is still today the highest annual production figure ever achieved by a single model. By then Ford was building Model T’s at a rate of up to 10,000 cars a day! For yearly production figures of the Model T click here.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/VW-Beetle-World-1965.jpgThe VW Beetle became millionaire in 1965

The next model to achieve millionaire status is the VW Beetle. Over 25 years after its conception in Germany, 1 million Beetles came out of the Wolfsburg factory in Germany in 1965 and in 1971 1.3 million units were produced around the world, the highest yearly figure in the nameplate’s 65 year-life. I estimate that the Beetle was above 1 million annual units between 1965 and 1972.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Chevrolet-Impala-USA-1965.jpgThe Chevrolet Impala sold 1,074,925 units in the US alone in 1965

1965 was the year of millionaires: that year the Chevrolet Impala sold 1,074,925 units in the US alone, still to this date the highest annual sales volume ever achieved by a single model in the US since World War 2. In fact no other model has managed to sell over a million annual units in the US since while the Impala did it twice, passing the million benchmark again in 1966.

We had to wait at least 20 years to welcome a new member in the millionaire club: the Toyota Corolla. Best-selling car in the world from the late seventies onwards, the Corolla could have potentially broken the million benchmark as early as in the mid-eighties, then passing it officially in 2005 (1.185m) and 2011 (1.142m). If you have any more official sales data for the Corolla please get in touch.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Ford-F-Series-USA-2003.jpgFord F-Series

Helped by tremendous success with American farmers the Ford F-Series truck sold 1,006,325 units around the world in 2000, 87% of which in the States. This is the only millionaire year for the F-Series I have official data for, however I estimate it has passed the benchmark 4 more times: in 1999 (estimated 1.001m sales), 2001 (1.047m), 2004 when it sold a record 939,511 units in the US (est. world 1.082m) and 2004 (1.031m).

Finally the VW Golf is the 6th millionaire nameplate, selling an official 1,143,044 units worldwide in 2000, but potentially passing the benchmark in 1993 also. Again if you have more data to share please get in touch.

New car sales in Denmark are back in positive, just: the market is up 1% year-on-year in May to 16,683 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 69,548 units, down 2% on 2011. Total reshuffle atop the models ranking: if the Toyota Aygo is #1 for the second month in a row with an excellent 765 sales and 4.6% and now up to #2 year-to-date like in 2011, the Kia Picanto, #2 this month at 735 units and 4.4%, manages to snap up the pole position in the 2012 year-to-date ranking with 2,504 sales and 3.6%, 45 units above the Aygo and 151 ahead of the Peugeot 107…

The Chevrolet Spark, still relatively weak in May at #11, loses the pole position it held over the Full Year 2011 and this year until last month, now relegated to 4th place overall. The VW Up! confirms it is a serious candidate for the title of best-selling model in Denmark by the end of 2012: it stays on the podium for the third consecutive month at #3 with 705 sales and 4.2% and is now #5 year-to-date, by far VW’s best-seller in the country.

The other great performer in the Top 10 is without a doubt the Peugeot 208, up to a brilliant 6th position for its first true month of sales in the country with 487 sales and 2.9% share. This makes Denmark the third best country for the 208 so far after the 4th spot it reached in Portugal last month and its 5th place in France in May.

The Slovenian car market is down a worrying 15% year-on-year in May to 4,660 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 23,347 units, down 14% on 2011. The podium is unchanged on last month, the 2012 year-to-date ranking and the Full Year 2011 ranking: the Renault Clio leads the way with 361 sales and a shiny 7.7% market share, ahead of the Renault Megane at 4.8% and the VW Polo at 3.5%, now ex-aequo with the Skoda Octavia for the third place. Below the VW Golf at #5, the Kia Rio lodges another very impressive month in Slovenia at #6 with 125 sales and 2.7% share.

But the best performer this month is the BMW 3 Series, boosted by its new generation and up 6 spots on April to #9 with 119 units and 2.6% while two months ago it wasn’t even in the Top 70! It is now #31 year-to-date at 233 sales and 1%. Other great performers this month include the Citroen Berlingo up 14 ranks to #7, the Mercedes B-Class up from outside the Top 50 to #15, the Fiat Panda up 30 spots to #20, the Citroen C4 Picasso up 22 to #21 and the Peugeot 208 up 12 to #22.

A few days ago I called for help on a few countries/territories that haven’t received much love as far as official sales data was concerned and thanks to Austin I can now share with you some very up-to-date figures for Hong Kong (China)! Only particularity: sales taken into account are only for the ‘environmentally friendly’ versions on sale in the country. Still gives a good idea of is popular with Hong Kong consumers: luxury models…

The Mercedes E-Class is very impressive and leads the way in the year-to-date ranking with 808 sales and a huge 15.4% market share, followed by the Nissan Serena at 499 and 9.5%. The BMW 5 Series takes the third spot year-to-date with 487 sales and 9.3% but takes off in May: 277 units and 19.9% share! The VW Golf is the third German model in the Top 4 at #4 with 364 sales ahead of the Toyota Ractis and Noah. Notice also the BMW 1 Series at #7 and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta at #14.

Australie Mai 2012: Now available with All-models ranking!

The Peugeot 4008 ranks #214 in May in Australia.

* See the Top 287 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to JB *

After one month off I am now able to share with you the sales of absolutely all models in Australia for May 2012. You can check out the original Top 40 article here. We won’t dwell on the top of the ranking as it has been covered before. Actually just one thing: notice (again) the 8th place of the Toyota Prado in May and 9th year-to-date compared to #28 in the Full Year 2011. Impressive. In the Top 20 it’s also worth mentioning the Nissan Dualis up to #19 this month: after a shy start it looks like the small Nissan SUV has found its target market in the country, it is now #26 year-to-date vs. #34 in 2011.

The Mercedes E Class has an exceptional month of May: up 53 spots to #46

The Honda Civic is back into familiar territory at #23 in May vs. #43 year-to-date and #48 in 2011, whereas the Ford Falcon sinks to (very) unfamiliar depths: down to #28 this month at 1,008 sales and #20 year-to-date vs. #9 in 2011… Solid performance of the Great Wall V-Series #41 with 0.8% market share both in May and year-to-date and of the Mercedes E-Class up 53 spots on April to #46 with 693 sales and 0.7%. Notice also the Subaru XV down 8 ranks to #45 vs. #33 year-to-date: has the novelty effect rubbed off already?

The Toyota Prado is delivering its best year so far in Australia.

Other notable performers in the Australian Top 100 this month include the Toyota FJ Cruiser at #70, the Mercedes M-Class up 37 spots to #78 and the Toyota Prius c at #83 with 243 sales and 0.3% vs. #58 with 405 units and 0.5% in April, its first month of sales in the country. Further down, the Audi Q3 is up 33 ranks on last month to #103, the Porsche Cayenne is up 20 to #126, the VW Scirocco up to #143 with 76 sales and the Peugeot 4008 is up to #214 with 13 units sold in its 2nd month in market.

The year-to-date total stands at 78,742 units up 13% on 2011. After securing a mammoth 14.5% market share in March, the Toyota Hilux improved further to an out-of-this-world 17% in April thanks to 2,840 sales and ‘falls’ back to 14.9% in May at 2,535 units. It is obviously #1 year-to-date with an imposing 11,136 sales and 14.1% share, already 59% of its Full Year 2011 volume…

Excellent month for the Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up #2 both in April at 9.8% share and May at 10.1% thanks to 1,719 sales, and now also in the 2012 year-to-date ranking at 7,140 units and 9.1%. #1 in 2011, the Toyota Land Cruiser is down to #3 year-to-date in 2012 with 6,950 sales and 8.8%. Like in 2011, the entire 2012 Top 7 is 100% Toyota, with the Prado at #4 followed by the Corolla, Hiace and Camry.

The best-selling non-Toyota in Oman in May is the Nissan Sunny up to a shiny 5th position with 654 sales and 3.8%, while the Lexus LX brilliantly maintains itself within the Top 10 at #9 with 376 units and 2.2%. It is now also #9 year-to-date vs. #13 in 2011. The only other model not belonging to the Toyota Group that manages to claw its way into the Omani Top 10 in May is the Hyundai Elantra at #10 with 344 sales and 2%.

Other great performers this month include the Nissan Altima up 18 spots on April to #14, the Hyundai Tucson up 18 to #18, the Nissan Juke up 32 to #32, the Hyundai Azera up 67 to #37, the Nissan Qashqai up 66 to #45, the Hyundai Veloster up 92 to #57, the Renault Duster landing directly at #62 and the Suzuki Jimny up 72 to #78.

Qatari new car sales are on fire this year: up 71% year-on-year in May to 8,180 registrations and up 40% year-to-date at 35,401 units. While the Toyota Land Cruiser is still in pole position year-to-date with 4,020 sales and 11.4% share, it is down to #2 in May for the second month in a row at 927 units and 11.3% down from 12.2% in April and passed by the Toyota Hilux at 1,116 sales and 13.6%, a stable share on April. The Hilux is #2 year-to-date with 3,391 units and 9.6%.

Only #8 over the Full Year 2011, the Toyota Prado is up to #3 both in May at 552 sales and 6.7% and year-to-date with 1,831 units and 5.2% vs. 2.4% in 2011. The Nissan D22 is solid at #4 with 3.5% ahead of the Lexus LX, extremely impressive since the start of 2012: after two months at 3.9% share it is down to a still excellent 3.1% in May and ranks #7 year-to-date with 979 sales and 2.8%, Qatar being the LX’s best performing country in the world.
Northern Ireland (UK) 2011: VW Golf #1, 207 and Avensis shine
After Scotland we are adding Norhern Ireland as a new territory covered by Best Selling Cars Blog. Unfortunately the most recent models data I found dates back to January 2011 so if you have any newer figures please make sure you get in touch by commenting on this post! In January 2011 the VW Golf was the best-seller in Northern Ireland, followed by the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus. Until now, nothing too surprising as these 3 models also are within the UK Top 5.

http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Peugeot-207-Northern-Ireland-2011.jpgPeugeot 207

However in 4th place we find the Peugeot 207, a clear improvement on the 9th place it holds in the UK at the same time. The Nissan Qashqai is also more successful in NI than in the UK at #5 vs. #10. The best-selling Vauxhall in NI is only 7th and it’s the Corsa. Notice also the Toyota Avensis at a brilliant #10, a position it is very far from holding in the UK ranking.

Luxembourg was one of the countries I didn’t have any news from since 2010… Thanks to Oscar I can share with you a Top 20 brands ranking, as there is still no models info readily available. If you know about the best-selling models in Luxembourg in 2011 and 2012 please make sure to get in touch by commenting on this post! New car sales in Luxembourg are down 15% year-on-year in May at 4,833 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 23,717 units, down 3% on 2011.

Volkswagen is still top of the class with 596 sales and 12.3% share in May and 3,119 and 13.2% year-to-date, however Audi is catching up: it holds the 2nd spot year-to-date with 2,196 units and 9.3% but takes off in May to 542 sales and a brilliant 11.2% market share! BMW rounds up the podium at 2,119 units and 8.9%, followed by Renault at 8.1%, Peugeot at 6.6% and Mercedes at 6.3%.

Cyprus had been unloved since 2006, date of the latest official models data I got for this country. Thanks to Oscar I can now share with you a Top 20 brands ranking, it’s not a models ranking but that’s the closest thing I have. The Cypriot new car market is struggling at -23% year-on-year over the first 4 months of 2011 to 4,329 registrations. Nissan was the best-selling brand in the country in 2011 with 15,2% of the market but is down to #2 this year at 496 sales and 11.5% below Ford with 565 units and 13.1%.

Based on this information it is possible that the Nissan Qashqai was the best-selling model in Cyprus in 2011 and could still be in pole position year-to-date in 2012, potentially ahead of the Ford Focus. Toyota rounds up the brands podium with 461 sales and 10.6%, ahead of Kia in very strong progression at #4 with 340 units and 7.9% (vs. #10 and 3.8% in 2011), Hyundai at 7.3% and Volkswagen at 6.2%. Mercedes is #7, Audi #8 and BMW #9. Notice also Land Rover breaking into the Top 20 at #18 thanks to the Range Rover Evoque.

If you have access to models data for Cyprus for any time after 2006 please get in touch by commenting on this article!

Thanks to Oscar I can now share with you a Top 20 brands ranking for Bosnia & Herzegovina. In 2011 the Bosnian new car market is down 2% to 8,750 registrations. Skoda stays by far the favourite brand in the country with over 20% of the market thanks to 1,762 sales. In all likelihood the Skoda Fabia should still be the best-selling model in Bosnia in 2011 followed by the Skoda Octavia.

Volkswagen delivers an excellent year at #2 with 1,365 units and 15.6% share, up 17% on 2010. Opel rounds up the brands podium with 830 sales and 9.5%, ahead of Renault at 7.8%, Chevrolet at 7.4%, Dacia at 6.8%, Citroen at 5.1%, Audi at 3.9%, Toyota at 3.8% and Ford at 3.5%.
