* NOW UPDATED with the Top 269 best-selling models! Click on title to see *

The Australian market continues to lodge solid month after solid month, up 4% year-on-year in March to 97,616 registrations and bringing the year-to-date total to 260,122 units, up 5% on 2011. Now it’s getting really serious: after becoming Australia’s favourite car over the Full Year 2011, for the first time the Mazda3 manages to stay #1 for the third month in a row in March with 3,818 sales and 3.9%. It is the 5th time in the last 10 months the 3 is #1 in Australia.

Now with Thai production levels back to normal after the floods, the Toyota Hilux is up to 2nd place for the first time since last October and only the 3rd time in the last 12 months at 3,561 units and 3.6%, ahead of the Holden Commodore, Toyota Corolla and Holden Cruze, surprisingly flat in spite of the arrival of the hatchback version.

The Nissan Navara is up to #6 for the first time since last May and the Nissan X-Trail breaks into the Australian Top 10 possibly for the very first time at #10, making Nissan the 4th best-selling brand in the country this month after Toyota, Holden and Mazda and kicking Ford down to #6 for the first time. Nissan’s 8,312 sales is the brand’s all-time record in Australia since becoming a full importer over 20 years ago.

Subaru XV

Mazda also has a record month thanks to the thunderous arrival of the Mazda CX-5 in 19th position for its first full month of sales in the country with 1,419 units sold. Australia is the CX-5′s 2nd best-performing country in the world so far behind the Netherlands where it ranks #18 this month… The Subaru XV continues to impress and leads the small SUV category for the 2nd month in a row with 1,002 sales and 1% share at #29.

Further down the ranking, the Great Wall V-Series pick-up shines at #40 with 719 units and 0.7% (and #38 year-to-date!), which means the summer of 2011-2012 will be remembered as the time the first Chinese model broke into the Australian Top 50. Other great performers this month include the VW Amarok at #52, Jeep Compass at #69, VW Jetta at #77, Hyundai i40 at #100 and Kia Optima at #101.

The Canadian models ranking podium is back to ‘normal’ this month with the Ford F-Series leading at 9,773 units, its best month since last September, ahead of the Dodge RAM at 6,684 sales and the Honda Civic at 6,037 units meaning the ranking is identical to the 2012 year-to-date and Full Year 2011 ones. The Hyundai Elantra stays #4 while the Dodge Grand Caravan is down 2 spots on February to #5. The Honda CR-V new generation shines at #7 with 4,104 sales.

The Nissan Rogue reaches its best-ever ranking in the country, up 6 ranks to #15 with 2,224 sales and is now #20 year-to-date vs.#29 in 2011. The Canadian market is similar to the Australian one in the way consumers go for similar but smaller cars than in the USA. So it’s no surprise that the Mazda CX-5 manages to gain a huge 94 spots to land in 25th place with 1,649 sales for its very first full month of sales in the country (it ranks #19 in Australia this month).

Car sales in Pakistan are up 6% year-on-year at 16,678 registrations with the first 3 months of the year at +7% and 46,623 units. Only sales of models produced locally are accounted for, which is a good estimate of the best-selling models in the country as imports are limited. Like in 2011 the Toyota Corolla leads the way both in March with 3,774 sales and 22.6% share (+11% on 2011) and year-to-date at 12,794 units and 27.4% (+6%).

The 28 year-old Suzuki Mehran resists in 2nd place in March with 3,116 sales and 18.7% (+17%) and year-to-date at 8,569 units and 18.4% (+14%). Excellent start of the year for the Suzuki Bolan up a massive 51% year-on-year to #3 with 2,435 sales and 14.6% share and 13.5% year-to-date, and for the Suzuki Alto at #4 in March and #5 year-to-date at 5,039 units and 10.8%, up 39% on 2011.

Allemagne Mars 2012: Polo above 10,000 units, BMW 1 Series #5

April 14th, 2012 matgasnier Leave a comment Go to comments

VW Polo

* See the Top 311 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

The German car market continues to resist pretty well, down just 3% year-on-year in March to 339,123 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 773,636 units, down 1% on 2011. The VW Golf delivers its best volume in 6 months at 26,481 sales and 7.8% while the VW Polo breaks the 10,000 monthly units for the first time for this generation with 10,352 sales and 3.1%, the nameplate’s last time being May 2009 right in the middle of scrappage schemes. Since October 2009, it is only the 2nd time after the VW Passat sold 10,052 units in May 2011 that a model other than the Golf is above 10,000.

BMW 1 Series

The VW Passat ranks #3 at 8,860 units and 2.6%, meaning Volkswagen monopolises the podium for the third time in a row and the 6th time in the last 12 months. Possibly helped by the GTC version, the Opel Astra is back up to #4 for the first time this year with 8,522 sales and 2.5% and is now also #4 year-to-date like in 2011. The new generation BMW 1 Series takes off and is up 14 spots on February to #5 at 7,123 units and 2.1%, its best ranking since January 2009 and highest volume since June 2009.

VW Tiguan

Before this year, the VW Tiguan had only managed to climb into the German monthly Top 10 twice in the nameplate’s 4 years life: in January and February 2011. In March, it ranks #7 with 6,120 sales and 1.8%, its third time in a row as part of the 10 best-selling models in the country! The new generation BMW 3 Series continues to grow, up 3 ranks on last month to #8 at 6,086 units.

Nissan Qashqai

Another model reaches never-seen-before heights: the Nissan Qashqai, up 12 spots on February to a best-ever 15th place with 5,211 sales, also its highest ever volume in the country. Previous bests were #18 in January 2011 and 4,638 in March 2011. The Qashqai also beat its highest position in France this month, reached its highest volume ever in the UK and as a result should rank higher than ever in the overall European ranking, soon to be published.

Ferrari 599 GTB

Further down the ranking, notice the VW Up! at #23 and 4,003 sales, its first time above 4,000, the Toyota Yaris up 19 spots to #30, Fiat Ducato up 30 to #35, Audi Q3 up 2 to a best-ever #43 and Mazda CX-5 up to #105 with 799 sales for its second month. The Peugeot 208 makes its very first appearance at #147 with 372 units, while the Lamborghini Aventador sells 8 units at #283, its best month so far, the Maybach is #300 with 2 units as is the Alfa Romeo 8C and the Ferrari 599 GTB sells just one unit.

The Chinese car market is up a modest 4% year-on-year in March to 1.4 million registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 3.77 million, down 2% on 2011. Now that the Buick Excelle has found its mojo and finished 2011 in pole position, it’s not letting it go: like in February, it ranks #1 this month with 24,134 sales. It’s the 5th time in the last 8 months the Excelle leads the Chinese models ranking.

The Chevrolet Sail is up 5 spots on February to a best-ever 2nd place at 23,094 units, while the VW Jetta reaches its best spot since March 2011 and its highest volume since January 2011 at #3 with 22,138 sales. After a couple of weak months in the wake of the new generation launch, the Honda CR-V hits its highest ranking and volume ever at #4 and 21,124 units, two records it also broke on the same month in the US. 3 Volkswagens follow: the Passat, still #2 year-to-date, the Bora and Lavida.

At #10 the Great Wall Haval H-Series is the best-selling Chinese model this month and ranks within the Top 10 for the third time ever after November and December 2011. Further down the ranking, the VW Magotan is up 36 spots on last month to #13, the Chery Tiggo is up 30 to #28 and the Chery E5 is up 11 to a best-ever 55th place. After a high at #31 in January, the Baojun 630 is down to #83 this month, not far above the Linian S1, the other new low-cost brand/model, up 28 spots to #99.
