il fuori scala delle luci posteriori, ma non essendo mio, non me la sono sentito

Ragazzi, Mosleylucky vuol sapere se nella foto della Targa '73 (dove sono in fila ai box un'Alfa 33TT12, la Ferrari 312PB e la Stratos) l'Alfa sullo sfondo è un muletto, perchè a lui sembra che il n.6 sul cupolone sia privo del portanumero tondo bianco....voi che dite?

Qualche tempo fa, ho tradotto in inglese un'intervista a Nino Vaccarella fatta da Luca Delli Carri per Ruoteclassiche....era per il sito "Velocetoday", ma ho pensato di postarla anche qui per i nostri amici stranieri....

 

For our foreign friends, here is the english translation of an interview with Nino Vaccarella, performed by Luca Delli Carri for "Ruoteclassiche"

 

NINO VACCARELLA, THE SIR OF THE CURVES.

it’s enough to mention the «Targa Florìo» race for pushing his name through everybody’s mind. The name of a Southern Italy "kid", born with an “heavy foot”, that for over fifteen years was able to rouse the souls of thousands of fans. As a symbol of his own land, the Sicily, when he started to race, even in Northern Italy wasn’t hard for him to «rule» everyone, that’s proven by the rich “palmares” which counts three victories just at Targa ("but they had to be at least seven" ) and so many others.

Nino Vaccarella is the last king of Italy. Of Sicily, indeed. Crowned by people’s enthusiasm in 19 racing years, he’s on the throne still today. His kingdom goes from Palermo to Bonfornello, from Cerda to Sclafani. These names tell you something? Ok, we’re talking about Targa Florio. Vaccarella, or the «Flying Headmaster» (as that time’s press nicknamed him because he was really the headmaster of Oriani Institute, Palermo, established in 1936 by his father), together with Olivier Gendebien and Umberto Maglioli is the Targa recordman: they are the three only drivers that won the most famous Sicilian race for three times. Vaccarella got the glory in 1965 with Lorenzo Bandini, in 1971 with Toine Hezemans and in 1975 with Arturo Merzario. But Vaccarella is something more than mere statistics. In fact, when you say Targa Florio, you say Vaccarella. Sicilians never loved anyone as much as him: he’s a local hero. In a land that had always to shine by reflected light: it had to support French, English, German and then Italian drivers. For Sicilian people, in any case, all strangers; people coming from the «continent». Then it was the hour of Vaccarella Nino (Nino it’s just his real name, not a diminutive), born in Palermo march 4, 1933; he raced from 1957 until 1975 driving cars such as Lancia, Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, racing with Grand Touring cars, Sport Prototypes and even Formula 1 cars (few races indeed), and winning, besides the Targa, all that a driver can wish to win: Le Mans 24 hours, Sebring 12 hours, Nurburgring 1000 kms; Sicilians rose their head. It was surely much more than a revenge.

Nino Vaccarella, Ninni for his friends, didn’t release many interviews in these last years, because in 1993 his unique son was involved in a huge racing car accident and today lives on a wheelchair. An hard shock for a man that had everything in his life. Something like an absurd penalty to pay to fortune. But when someone talks again about cars, about those cars and about those years, the gray veil turns away from his eyes and Nino recovers the enthusiasm, the irony, the miming and especially the caressing and modulated voice that make every Sicilian a real actor. He doesn’t smile, but perhaps he didn’t smile even at that time. But then he reproduces with his lips his Ferraris’s rumble at Targa Florio, as children do, and you ask to yourself if his racing desire has really gone away. And you should say: no, there still isn’t an effective “aspirin” for racing fever. Nino would have won much more, and maybe he could deserve it. But the age, the end of the romantic era of car racing and the birth of a beloved son took the steering wheel from his hands and put him by force in retire. With the absurd pretension that one such as him could say farewell as if it was nothing. Without understanding that legends, fortunately, never go in retire.

 

Professor, when you realized that you had a burning passion for motor racing?

«When I was a kid. I lived in Palermo, in Liberty Street (the central and most elegant street, n.o.t.), just behind an Alfa Romeo dealer where arrived the racing cars entering the Giro di Sicilia (the Tour of Sicily, one of the most famed street races in Italy after the Mille Miglia). There were drivers like Piero Taruffi, Gigi Villoresi, Alberto Ascari... I was a kid and went to school: I heard the opened exhaust engines' rumble, I ran away from home and I went to the garage to gaze at cars and drivers. I spent in this way whole afternoons. Moreover, the Giro di Sicilia started just in front of my home. We lived at the ground floor and we had a little garden: the starting day we built a little stand and we looked at the cars passing in front of us, from midnight until the morning. One hundred fifty, two hundred cars. .. it was a great feast, and between a feast and another one, my passion arose».

 

When you started to drive?

«I took my driving licence very soon, and I immediately started to drive, but with a racing spirit; when I climbed on a car, I was always racing. Thus I had some accidents, and I went so far to crash my father's brand new car: a Fiat "1100/103". We had a friendly trip to Cefalù, and while coming back we made a race: it ended against a bridge».

 

Why you were so reckless at the wheel?

«I was young, I was only twenty. I wanted to show to the others I was always the fastest. Kids' stuff».

 

And then?

«Then I kept driving, but secretly, because my father prevented me from taking his car. I stole my mother's car, and avoided to crash against others bridges. I was lucky, because I drove really fast, in an almost bold way. When my father died, in 1956, I became my school's manager, together with my sister. As a first thing, I entered a little hillclimbing race (Palermo Passo di Rigano - Bellolampo, n.o.t.): it was the end of '56... and the first earned money was spent to purchase a new car: a Lancia "Aurelia 2500", my first own car, 1957».

 

You grew up on Sicily's roads...

«Fantastic roads, from a didactic point of view. Because they are twisty, fast or slow, and they are difficult. I learned how to race by driving in ascent and descent: up and down, up and down. We were some friends that shared car passion, and every night we organized a trip, towards Termini or towards Trapani (east and west from Palermo, n.o.t.), that became always a race. The excuse was going to have an ice cream or a coffee, but the real reason was driving».

 

What was your child's dream? «Becoming a driver. A champion, indeed. Not like many people that say this and then are lost in troubles: I didn't see any obstacle in front of me. I knew that one day I would have raced against the greatest».

 

Who was the driver that you wished to emulate?

«Before starting to race, Ascari, Fangio and Moss. But I felt to have a very strong personality: I wanted to be Vaccarella. Nino Vaccarella that could beat the champions. My friends told me I was crazy. But when I began to win important races, they saw at me with different eyes...».

 

Did your driving career turn into the right bend straight away?

«I got immediately good results, winning some races. In 1958 I achieved may first overall victory: "Passo di Rigano-Bellolampo", an hillclimb in which there weren’t sportscars, but only GT cars. And the "Aurelia" didn’t betray me. In the rest of races, I always managed to be rather well placed: those were lucky times».

 

And you were a lucky boy...

«Yes, but in the sense that all I did worked well. I wasn’t a tycoon, if this is what you’re meaning. I earned well with my job, and it gave me liquid assets, but I didn’t throw away my money. When in 1959 it was matter to join the Sport class, someone offered me a "Testa Rossa" Ferrari, but it was too expensive. I went instead to Modena at Maserati and I purchased the “2000 Sport” of Italian 1958 Champion, Adolfo Tedeschi. It was an hard negotiation, but eventually I achieved to get a good price... No, I wasn’t a young rich man from Palermo, like Pucci or Bordonaro».

 

How was Modena in that years?

«It was the automotive land. There were drivers, tuners, manufacturers. There was De Tomaso, I remember, Stanguellini, the “Scuderia Serenissima”, Maserati, Osca, Ferrari. It was car racing’s “Mecca”. I remember that the hotel where I slept, the Hotel Reale, was always fulfilled with champions: from Fangio to Moss, from Maglioli to American drivers».

 

When you started to race also in Northern Italy?

«After my second race with a Sport car, the Palermo-Montepellegrino hillclimb, that was a national level race, the press began to notice me. I was the boy that beated the champions. At Pergusa I made the best lap in practice and won the race, in front of Cabianca and Scarfiotti. Someone wrote on the papers: "The new man comes from South". And someone answered: "Yes, he comes from the South, but does he race only there?”. Thus I went up to North. And I blew them all. And in 1960 the Scuderia Camoradi entrusted me with a Maserati "Birdcage" for the Targa Florio race, that I had to share with Umberto Maglioli. For the first time I felt as an international driver. And it was a legendary Targa Florio: Maglioli was the first to start and I took over the car from him in third place; In my two laps I went on the lead with an advantage of 3 minutes 49 seconds on Ferrari and Porsche squadrons. That means: von Trips, Gendebien, Mairesse, Ginther, Hermann, Barth. Even if we had to withdraw for fuel tank’s rupture, the Sicilians went literally crazy...».

 

Until that moment nobody among Sicilian drivers had fought so close to victory…

«In 1960, for the first time, they achieved to see one of them in front of all the champions. Just in their race. This is the reason why my victories were always Sicily’s victories».

 

What was the Targa Florio for Sicilian people?

«Everything. A myth, a legend. A very hard race, full of snares, with climbing and descending curves, slow and fast, with different asphalt types, passing through villages, with the sheeps that could creep out of the fields. For Sicily, the Targa Florio was a real feast. People left their homes very soon, drove their tents, lighted the bonfires and cooked. They even bet. Seventy-two kilometers of enthusiasts, unchained cheering, hills full of people. And if I withdrew, the people went away. It was a wonderful love story».

 

Which was your secret to win the Targa?

«To know it well. In january I began to test the course: I knew it meter by meter, I knew that in front of that house I could go flat out, that after that olive tree there was a peculiar bend , that where was that wall with the “Nino” inscription, I had to brake. And you had to be very regular, lap by lap: some drivers that marked incredible record laptimes, like Vic Elford for example, often spun or went off. And then there were the “Targa men": like Rodriguez, Marko, Merzario. Like Vaccarella».

 

What do you feel to be a whole land’s symbol?

«It’s fantastic».

 

It was like thousands of Sicilians were on the car with you….

«I ran for them, with them; when I passed by, they made an human corridor, to incite me; thus, instead of favouring, they made my life hard».

 

Still today there are some walls with fans’ incitements for you…

«Yes, some inscription still remains. Because it’s bloody paint, sicilian blood. I remember that somebody wrote “Vai Nino (Go Nino) on the road with white paint: Collesano’s road was a whole white coat and it was awfully slippery».

 

To dare: what is it for you?

«It’s youth. When you’re young you are daring, brave, you forget the danger. To be young means to say: “From today I won’t race anymore, it’s over”, and after two hours or two days you are already thinking again of the car. All things I can understand today. Today that ninety percent of my friends aren’t here anymore. And I’m not alive because I’m smarter, but simply more lucky. I think about 1963 Nurburgring crash: I had no harness, 120 litres of fuel in my tank: the car turned upside down, it was destroyed, but It didn’t catch any fire…how many coincidences to remain alive».

 

Do you feel like a survivor?

«Yes. I saw the death with my own eyes, in a crash that, if it’s repeated one hundred times, ninety times is fatal. I had to die. I survived, with an arm in a mess, but I survived. It was Friday, 17».

 

Are you superstitious?

«No. Or, at least, I try not to be like that. But sometimes I don’t understand why one is save after an horrific crash, and another dies in a silly one. Life is made of lucky episodes».

 

Do you believe in God?

«Yes, but I’m waiting for some answers from God, that still don’t come. Especially when I think of my son, my unique son that since 1993 lives on a wheelchair. For one year and an half this was driving me crazy: an healthy boy, full of passion…and his co-driver that was totally unhurt, not even a little injury…and then I ask to myself “Why?”».

 

Professor, try to close your eyes and to think about your car racing adventure: which is the first image that comes up to your mind?

«I see a boy that felt to be very fast. The fastest Italian driver».

 

What were racing cars for you'?

«My greatest love. My first great love, indeed».

 

And the second?

«My son».

 

Which course was more difficult: Nurburgring or Targa?

«Surely the old ‘Ring. An awful circuit, it didn’t forget any mistake. Difficult, very difficult. The most difficult track in the world. Because it was fast. Targa wasn’t fast... they said that I was the Targa man, and I have been, but I didn’t love the course very much: I was an high speed man. I loved Le Mans, Spa-Francorchamps, the three-hundred kph bends. I was a leader at Targa Florio because I had to be a leader: because of my great course’s knowledge and mainly because I’m Sicilian».

 

It ever happened that you were overtaken during the Targa Florio?

«Only once. And I greatly, fiercely returned the favour. It was 1970 and Ferrari raced the "512 S"(the co-driver was Giunti, n.o.t.). I took the start, and at the beginning it was hard for me to “warm up”. At Sclafani I realized that Siffert (Porsche, n.o.t.) was behind me. At Scillato’s junction I let him pass and Siffert went away. But in the Collesano’s descent, where high speeds were reached, I could smell his burnt fuel. Inside Campofelice I saw his Porsche. I passed him on Bonfornello straight, more than hundred kph faster. Since then, I didn’t see him anymore. At the end we were on third place because we had to refuel three times more than Porsches. Fangio said that the moral race winners were Giunti and Vaccarella. And (Enzo) Ferrari was stunned».

 

How would you describe Enzo Ferrari?

«An awfully complicated man; I would have known him better, but I think that it wasn’t easy anyway.

 

Is it true that you said no to a Ferrari’s call?

«It’s true, but it didn’t depend on my will. In 1961 Romolo Tavoni, Ferrari’s team manager, called me up. But I just had signed for Scuderia Serenissima, and I didn’t have the nerve to say to Count Volpi : "Hi boys, do what you want, but I’m going to race for Maranello". If I’d come back, maybe I could find the nerve. Ferrari was a dream to me, a dream that was coming true. And you feel yourself a little incredulous when they ask to you to drive for the Prancing Horse team, as when I could hear the Mameli’s Hymn (the Italian national hymn, n.o.t.) after my abroad victories. At Le Mans, with one hundred thousand people on the grandstands, I asked to myself: "But do they’re really playing for me?"».

 

What you wouldn’t do again in your lifetime?

«I would try to be less sentimental. A little less, at least. For instance, I would have driven for Porsche, in order to get those results that I couldn’t afford with Ferrari».

 

Vaccarella and Formula One?

«Formula 1 was very much easier for me to drive than the Sport-Prototypes. The power was incredibly greater than in the singleseaters: four liters vs. one and a half. All the best drivers drove Sport-prototypes: Bonnier, Siffert, Elford... And endurance races were more attracting. In 1965, when I won the Targa Florio, Ferrari as a gift made me to race in the Italian F. 1 Grand Prix. I got the same laptime as John Surtees did in the same car the previous year. But after 67 practice laps, they didn’t change my engine, and it blew on the 45th race lap».

 

Did you ever consider that it was possible for you to die?

«Nooo, I never thought . When I lost some friend in a race crash, I said to myself "I won’t race anymore". But after three, four days, when came the Maranello’s call to test a car, I took the airplane and went. It’s loving races. It’s the people’s cheering when you win. It’s the need for speed».

 

What is the speed?

«It’s challenging the nature rules. It’s freedom will. It’s almost like flying. A wonderful thing. You need to have it inside».

 

What is that makes a man to become a driver?

«It’s a birth matter. All the rest doesn’t count».

 

When a driver can say he’s mature?

«When he’s fast, but also thoughtful. It’s an experience matter. I’ve lost a Targa, in 1967, for exceeding in rush. I was giving to all the others one minute and an half a lap, thus there was no reason to go so fast. But me, I absolutely wanted to win with the new record and, approaching an hairpin, I braked too late and hit a pavement ( breaking a rim, n.o.t). Then something changed in me: after mistakes like this a driver comes smarter.

 

Dou you think you could have won more races in your career?

«I could have won much more. Looking back I can say that I should have won seven Targa Florio, not three.

What’s happiness?

«Make your own dream come true. It isn’t money, it isn’t fortune. I had a dream, and made it true. All by myself: Vaccarella became great by himself».

 

Nino Vaccarella was one of the most “long-lived” drivers:19 years of racing. Why?

«I didn’t feel totally satisfied, thus I kept on racing, hoping to get some more results».

 

What’s ambition?

«It’s focusing on some targets and getting them. It’s a feature of those who have some value to demonstrate. Ambition it’s part of people that have some contents».

 

It’s courage enough to win?

«No, it isn’t. It’s courage when you act with recklessness, without knowledge. I was brave only in a few occasions, when it needed to go a little beyond».

 

Did you ever have fright?

«When I had my Nurburgring crash, yes. But the fright is only for a few moments. After, you’re already out: either you escaped, or the disaster has already happened».

 

What about Baron Pucci’s victory at 1964 Targa?

«It comments on itself. Antonio was one of many gentleman drivers from Sicily, and he even achieved some good results. That’s why when I came Sicilian people said “at last!”. They rose up their head on motor racing world. They hadn’t to cheer anymore only for italian or foreign drivers».

 

When the Targa lost its glamour?

«In 1973, when it lost its value for Manufacturers World Championship. It wasn’t anymore that international automotive show, as it had been before».

 

You were, together with Gendebien and Maglioli, the only three-times Targa Florio winners. But if you say “Targa”, the name that comes up at once is “Vaccarella”. Why?

«Because he was a symbol. And for him, six- or seven hundred thousand people came to see the race».

 

How many kilometers did you drive on Targa roads?

«Who knows…Surely tenths of thousands».

 

Why ever you married so late, in 1972?

«Because I didn’t meet the woman of my life before».

 

It was races’ guilt?

«No. Or maybe yes. When in 1973 my son was born, I didn’t race anymore with the same serenity. "Be careful, if you hurt yourself, what will happen to your son?" I said to myself the night before the race. And when you begin to have these thoughts, when in the middle of a fast bend you begin to think, it’s very hard to keep racing. This was because I decided to stop, in 1975. Otherwise, who knows, maybe I could go on».

 

Professor, after you the spotlights on motoring Sicily were turned off…

«It’s well known, even the fairy-tales end».

Credo si tratti di un effetto luce, la foto si riferisce alla partenza, questa e stata

scattata subito dopo.

caro amico bepvit hai ragione l'alfa in prova aveva il numero sul cupolone è dentro lo sfondo bianco percio la foto dell'amico francese sara stata scattata prima non il giorno delle prove.come si vede nella foto

caro amico bepvit hai ragione l'alfa in prova aveva il numero sul cupolone è dentro lo sfondo bianco percio la foto dell'amico francese sara stata scattata prima non il giorno delle prove.come si vede nella foto

 

 

 

è soltanto un effetto di luce, il tondo bianco col numero c'è sempre !

 

Preciso meglio: ho foto della macchina senza numeri, ma senza i tondi bianchi; i numeri sono sempre nel tondo.

Toglimi una curiosità Gianni: a quando risale la realizzazione di quel modellino ?

Ti faccio questa domanda perchè esso non è nel tuo standard attuale e forse nemmeno precedente...(franchezza innanzi tutto, come siamo ormai abituati)

Forse perchè era un modello non tuo...e inconsciamente non hai messo l'amore e l'attenzione che solitamente metti ?

 

Io non ho mai montato modelli per altri, ma sicuramente mi è capitato che quando mi accingo all'opera, ci sono modelli che attraggono più di altri, li fai più volentieri di altri, ci metti più attenzione, ti soffermi di più sul particolare, te lo riguardi tante volte prima di dire...finito ! Vero no ?

Com'è anche vero che da quando ci confrontiamo sul topic, stiamo più attenti e accurati rispetto a qualche tempo fà, onde evitare benevoli rimbrotti ?

Per me è senz'altro così, solo la "fregola" di finire...(pessima nemica del modellista) mi porta a sottovalutare certi dettagli che avrei potuto fare (secondo le proprie capacità)..., oppure un pò di pigrizia e sufficienza se il soggetto non ti appassiona, o come già spiegato, se ne vale davvero la pena andare in fondo, a quella scala;

quante volte si rimane insoddisfatti... o beati a compiacersi...

Indubbiamente per questo hobby ci vuole...l'ispirazione, guai a farlo per routine...!

Purtoppo può capitare quando segui il tema di una collezione...; è inevitabile che dovrai cimentarti con modelli che non ti sono mai piaciuti..., ma che impreziosiscono la collezione...

C'è da fare un trattato sulla genesi di una creazione modellistica cari amici...

Cari amici,

 

alcune pagine addietro qualcuno, forse Shorty, postando la foto della GiGi 1300, prototipo Palermitano motorizzato Fulvia 1300 e costruito dall'Ingegner Garofalo, si chiese che fine avesse fatto.

 

Mi sono ricordato che parecchi anni addietro, ad una manifestazione svoltasi a Pergusa, dove erano presenti, fra l'altro, molte Lancia, conobbi l'allora presidente del "Lancia HF Club" certo Loris Giorgetti di Forlì; chiaccherando mi disse di possedere quella barchetta e mi, anzi ci chiese, perchè era presente anche Bepvit che dovrebbe ricordarsene, notizie su quell'auto in quanto era impegnato nel suo restauro e ne voleva sapere di più.

 

A questo punto mi rivolgo ad Umberto, lui quasi certamente conosce questa persona e potrebbe informarsi se ha ancora lui l'auto e magari ottenerne qualche notizia e delle foto.

Sarà sicuramente un logo di scuderia, ma quale ?

 

 

 

Mi sembra di ricordare quel logo: credo fosse il logo non della scuderia ma della concessionaria Renault di Naddeo: è composta da una "n" inserita in un paesaggio (il profilo di una città di mare? Venezia? Non so di dov'é Naddeo...) Ricordo che esisteva un bannerino pubblicitario su Autosprint negli anni 78/79. Purtoppo la mia collezione è ad Orvieto, non posso cercare per ora. Comunque, per come ricordo:

Pour ce qui règarde l'Alfa, en lisant les rèponses des "experts" il semble que cette voiture a conduit des essais libres sans aucun nùmero, mais quand elle avait ses nùmeros, ils ètaient toujours sur rond blanc....tu dois considèrer que ceux qui ont repondu, à part des photos, ont suivi personnellement l'edition '73...

 

Nous esperons de t'interesser avec des autres questions ed de trouver toujours une rèponse (pas facile, mais on essaye...)

Piccolo OT modellistico e non solo...

 

finalmente ho trovato un'ottima riproduzione, in scala 1/24, della mitica Ford Escort RS Mk1; si tratta di un trans-kit prodotto artigiamalmente ed in tiratura limitata, praticamente su ordinazione, da usare sulla base della Mk2 Esci/Revell.

 

Con questo trans-kit è possibile realizzare sia versioni 1600 che 2000, rally o pista; la foto del modello finito si riferisce a quella della scuderia Alan Mann/Broadspeed in versione pista, ma con un po' di documentazione e facendo o facendosi fare le decal, si possono fare un'infinità di altre versioni.

 

La qualità delle stampate è ottima, priva di flash e soprattutto di bolle, un ottimo prodotto; se qualcuno è interessato, può contattarmi privatamente per avere tutti i dettagli ed il contatto per averlo.

 

Naturalmente, a questo punto chiedo agli esperti di rally e/o di altre gare come Pergusa, se si hanno notizie di partecipazioni, di questa splendida auto, in Sicilia.

Infatti caro Ninno, una buona base ti invoglia... e ti ripaga ! Bellissima, ne valeva la pena no ?

 

Come base non posso dire altrettanto per la mia "riciclata" di turno...(stà uscendo in anticipo :lol::lol: ).

Avevo realizzato la prima versione di A.R.Giulietta SVZ a cui fece seguito questa da me presa in esame nella marcia di avvicinamento alla definitiva SZ.

La vettura è la versione successiva che ha corso alla Targa del '58 con Ada Pace e Carlo Peroglio (fuori tempo massimo)
